Shiny enamel coats this still sharply serrated tooth of the world's largest shark species to ever lived. Carcharodon megalodon meaning "big tooth" in greek, was an extinct species of shark that lived approximately 23 to 2.6 million years ago, during the Cenozoic Era (early Miocene to end of Pliocene).

Regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators in vertebrate history, C. megalodon probably had a profound impact on the structure of marine communities. Fossil remains suggest that this giant shark reached a length of 18 metres (59 ft), and also indicate that it had a cosmopolitan distribution.

This specimen measures some 3.85 inches and has almost perfect enamel on the front of the tooth. Similarly perfect on the back, it also boasts a good deal of still sharp serrations. A tooth of this size and perfect condition is pretty rare and to add to that is the amazing detailed preservation of serrations on this large tooth.

Found on a dive trip by divers off the coasts of South Carolina, USA. Definitely a great conversational piece if not great collector's item!
